Warri Refinery Workers to Resume Protest on August 19

The Warri Refinery workers, who have been on the job since 2022, are demanding better pay, benefits, and job security

Support staff of the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPCL) have announced plans to resume their protest on August 19, citing poor working conditions and unfair treatment.

In an open letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the workers decried the refusal of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to approve and implement a new remuneration package and condition of service.

The Warri Refinery workers, who have been on the job since 2022, are demanding better pay, benefits, and job security.

They claim that they have been subjected to “workplace slavery” and are being denied basic entitlements such as housing allowance, transport allowance, and medical insurance.

The protest is also sparked by a recent NNPC advertisement seeking experienced hires with a maximum age limit of 37 years, which the workers see as an attempt to edge them out.

The support staff, who have been instrumental in maintaining and operating the refinery, are seeking immediate intervention from the Senate President to address their grievances.

Key Demands:

  • Approval and implementation of a new remuneration package and condition of service
  • Absorption of at least 50% of support staff in the ongoing recruitment exercise
  • Removal of age limit and Master’s degree requirement for experienced hires

Planned Protest:

  • Date: August 19, 2024
  • Location: Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited

The workers have vowed to take their chances and resume their protest if their demands are not met, warning that the situation may escalate if their voices are not heard.
