Shell Claims Oil Spill Reduction by 450% in Nigeria

By Adaobi Rhema Oguejiofor

Shell, a British multinational oil and gas company, has said that its crude oil spills in Nigeria reduced from 3,300 tonnes in 2021 to 600 tonnes in 2022 after a brief shutdown.

Further analysis by Valuechain shows that the tonnage figures given by Shell represent a 450% reduction in spills within the period under review.

According to a report by Reuters, Shell said that the sharp decline in its oil spills was as a result of its 6-month shutdown of operations amidst the continuous attacks on its facilities in the Niger Delta.

The report also mentioned that Shell said its carbon emissions (Co2) in 2022 fell by about 10 percent which is equivalent to 1.232 billion tonnes.

It further implied that the shutdown helped to drastically reduce the volume of crude oil spills by vandalism in the Niger Delta, as the number of such spills fell from 106 to 75 in 2022.
