NNPC: What Is Operation White?

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) inaugurated 89 individuals from five (5) different key agencies to ensure and enforce transparency and accountability in the distribution of petroleum products in the country.

Speaking at a brief ceremony held at the NNPC Towers Thursday in Abuja to launch the initiative code-named ‘Operation White’, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, said “the team would help to authenticate the actual volume of products imported and consumed in the country and ensure that the nation attains energy security.”

He further went on to say that “Operation White’ would monitor and track every molecule of petroleum products imported into the country and follow it through to the pump, adding that the NNPC was poised to support the Federal Government in its quest to guaranteeing energy security for the country.”

In his earlier visit to the ‘Operation White’s team at the Command and Control Centre at the NNPC Towers, he urged the team to handle each individual assignment they were assigned with utmost zeal, patriotism and commitment.

He further went in to stress that this initiative was long overdue and a welcome development in light of the present developments.

He was also optimistic that this Operation will stem the smuggling of petroleum products by certain unruly operators and that any monies saved or proceeds from illegal transactions intercepted in the course of ‘Operation White’ will be used in supporting infrastructure development of the country.

He points out that after a few weeks of closing the nation’s land borders, daily Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) consumption has dropped from 60 million litres per day to 53 million litres per day.

Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mallam Kyari, charges the members of ‘Operation White’s to control the leakages of PMS and other petroleum products, pointing out that they have no other resolve that to come out victorious.

Mallam Kyari said that in line with his Management’s vision of Transparency, Accountability and Performance Excellence (TAPE), his team will continue to be transparent by ensuring that the entire operations of the Oil and Gas Industry will remain available to the entire public.

Earlier, the Managing Director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) and the team lead for ‘Operation White,’ Mr. Bala Wunti, said that “adequate institutional and governance structure of the team’s operations has been put in place.”

He also pointed out that the members of the‘Operation White’ we’re very thoroughly selected and are people of great competence and high level of integrity.

“Today, we are good to go and we will see our transaction end-to-end as is the case in other countries. We are poised to support the Minister to ensure that energy security is guaranteed for our dear country so that our principal, President Muhammadu Buhari, would be proud of us,” – Bala Wunti.
