The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Tuesday said it would deploy a new technology to address cases of pipeline vandalism across the country.
NNPC’s Group Managing Director, Mele Kyari, stated that as part of measures to mitigate the incidents of pipeline vandalism, NNPC planned to deploy Horizontal Directional Drilling Technology.
He disclosed that HDD technology would make it difficult for the vandals to easily vandalise the pipelines.
Kyari decried the activities of pipeline vandals who torched parts of the corporation’s pipeline network in Abule Egba area of Lagos State on Sunday that led to the loss of lives and properties.
He said the recent incident in Lagos was perpetrated in an open arena and urged Nigerians to always report miscreants who indulged in such activities to security agencies.
He said NNPC was collaborating with all security agencies across the country to curb the occurrences of pipeline vandalism.
Kyari was quoted in a statement by the corporation as saying, “We are having a syndicated approach to the pipeline challenge. First, there is the security aspect of it over which we are getting the optimum support and cooperation of the entire security network spearheaded by the Chief of Defence Staff.
“Another is at the level of the National Assembly which has stepped into this with an Ad hoc committee working on how to assist us to stem the menace of pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft.”
