FG Throws Weight Behind Local Content in Mining Operations

In a recent statement, Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, has expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting mining companies that prioritize local content in their operations.

The announcement, made by Segun Tomori, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, emphasized the government’s strategy to stimulate economic growth and benefit host communities.

Mr. Alake encouraged mining companies to integrate Nigerians extensively into their workforce, drawing inspiration from the Segilola gold project in Ilesha, Osun State.

This project stands out as a model for the sector, with over 95% of its staff being Nigerian nationals. “It’s heartening to see a project of this scale being led predominantly by Nigerians. This is a commendable approach and sets a benchmark for both local and international investors,” Alake remarked.

The minister also highlighted the importance of creating a secure and unrestricted operational environment, which would lead to optimal benefits for the operators, the local communities, and the government.

He praised the Segilola gold project for its efficient methods and adherence to the ministry’s vision, despite initial challenges.

As part of his seven-point agenda to revitalize the mining sector, Alake has focused on enhancing the security of mining environments. This includes the recent introduction of a mines marshal to oversee and enforce regulations within the industry.

The Federal Government’s support for local content is a significant step towards sustainable development in the mining sector, ensuring that the benefits of natural resource exploitation extend to all stakeholders involved.
