Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1st, 1960. It was a significant milestone in the country’s history, a moment of hope and promise for the nation. But ever since independence, Nigeria has been plagued by widespread corruption, economic instability, infrastructural challenges and political instability.
Corruption has taken a significant toll on the country’s economy and well-being of the people. It has stifled economic growth, weakened institutions, and limited opportunities for the Nigerian populace, thereby placing the country on the verge of collapse.
Over the years, Nigerians have expressed their frustration due to the worsening corruption and leadership problems that seem to persist. Despite the government’s constant promises to tackle corruption and introduce reforms, it remains a pervasive problem in Nigeria. According to Transparency International, Nigeria ranks 149th out of 180 countries in the Corruption Perceptions Index, underlining the scale of the problem.
The impact of corruption is felt across various sectors, from healthcare to education, security, and infrastructure. Funds that should be used to provide essential services are being siphoned off by corrupt officials, leaving ordinary Nigerians to live in poverty and a constant struggle to survive. This has resulted in a sense of hopelessness and disillusionment among the youth, leading to the rise of insecurity, civil unrest, and other grave social issues.
In conclusion, Nigeria’s independence was a momentous occasion, but the country has since struggled to live up to its full potential. Corruption has stymied Nigeria’s growth and transformation, hindering progress and development. To build a better future for Nigerians, it is essential to address this corrupt culture and create a system that upholds transparency, accountability, and justice. Only then can Nigerians truly realize the promise of independence and move towards a brighter future. So my gift to you all this month of independence is this short poem.
THE SYSTEM WE HAIL THEE
The system we hail thee
She claims to protect you and me
For a while, she had us blind
But she became limpid over time
The system we hail thee
Built on buttes of lies
Courageously displaying insignias of falsehood
We hear the clatter of abuse
Confined as our voices confiscated
Compelled to operate in conformity
The system we hail thee
They came
They promised
But did not show signs of exertion
Rather, they expanded our exhaustion
The least we expect as
As generations continue to build a fortress
Ignoring her laws she continues to digress
The system we hail thee.
