The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Power, has announced the completion of the Zungeru hydropower project.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, who shared insights on the issue through his twitter handle over the weekend. He said that the project has been completed and is ready to increase the country’s electricity capacity by sending power to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Aliyu, who had recently paid a visit to the Zungeru site in Niger state, said that all the turbines had been tested and plans were being concluded for the official launch of the project.

Zungeru is the biggest hydropower project in Nigeria and it is located 77 kilometers (km) downstream of the Shiroro Hydropower Project in Niger State. The Zungeru hydropower project is capable of providing power generation, flood protection, and water for irrigation.

The project completion is a timely one as it was earlier scheduled to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2023.
