Buhari revokes Obasanjo’s policy, returns history to schools’ curriculum

Nigerian Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, has directed that all primary and secondary schools should by next academic calendar commence the teaching of history as a stand-alone subject.

A post by his media aide, Bashir Ahmad on Friday, quoted President Buhari as giving the directive in Abuja.

Ahmad wrote, “The Federal Government has directed all primary and secondary schools across the country to immediately implement the teaching of history as a standalone subject from the next academic calendar

According to Ahmad, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education Mr. Sonny Echono, disclosed “it today (Thursday) in Abuja.”

History was officially deleted from primary and secondary school curriculum in 2007 when former President Olusegun Obasanjo was in power.

Earlier before its complete obliteration, history had suffered serious attacks beginning from the 1969 National Curriculum Conference, which resulted in the adoption of a National Policy on Education, and subsequent adoption of a 6-3-3-4 system of education.

The conference saw teaching of history in Nigerian primary and secondary schools decline gradually until its removal from basic school curriculum in 2007 and implementation in 2009 and 2010.
