The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) has appealed to the Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Abubakar Audi, over the alleged attack, brutalization and unlawful detention of customers and staff of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) by operatives of the Corps.
It also said that the operatives of the Corps stormed into the Port Harcourt Disco’s injection substation in Rumuola and violently attacked, as well as brutalized both staff and customers, including a pregnant woman with whips.
The operatives were also accused of destroying properties worth millions of naira over an alleged disconnection of power supply to the NSCDC office in Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Secretary General of SSAEAC, South-South and South-East, Comrade Innocent Lord-Douglas, condemned the incident, describing it as barbaric.
He accused the operatives of NSCDC of taking away phones, cash and valuables of their victims and also carrying away some of the said victims to their office for illegal detention.
Meanwhile, Lord-Douglas has threatened to take legal action against NSCDC over the issue, stating that the Corps must pay its electricity bills, as well as pay for the medical treatment of the victims who sustained bodily injuries.
He also vowed that NSCDC must sign an undertaking to avert any of such occurrences in the future.
