Aprotest is a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something. Protest, most commonly means a public show of disapproval of or opposition to something. Protests are often held against things like a nation’s involvement in a war or specific government policies or forms of injustice.
Protests have become an important tool for Nigerians to express their frustration and push for change, especially in recent times. From the #EndSARS movement to various “End Bad Governance” protests, teenagers have played a growing role in these movements. While participating in protests can be an eye-opening experience for young people, it also comes with risks. In this article, we are going to explore both the positive and negative effects of protests on teenagers in Nigeria, with comparisons to recent protests like #EndSARS and “End Bad Governance.”

EndSARS Protests (2020):

This was one of the most significant protests in recent Nigerian history, calling for an end to police brutality by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Teenagers were deeply involved; online and on the streets, demanding justice and reforms. The protests highlighted the power of youth activism but it also exposed the risks of violent crackdowns by authorities.

“End Bad Governance” Protests (2020-2021):
Following the #EndSARS movement, protests shifted to a broader demand for an end to bad governance. Young people, including teenagers, were vocal in expressing their dissatisfaction with the country’s leadership, corruption, and lack of opportunities. However, the protests faced similar challenges, including arrests, intimidation, and violence against demonstrators.
Now, let’s assess the positive and negative effects of protests on young people.

Positive Effects of Protests on Teenagers
-Empowerment and Advocacy
When teenagers join protests like the “End Bad Governance” demonstrations, they feel empowered because they are actively contributing to social change. They see that their voices, even as young citizens, can influence public opinion and force the government to take action. This sense of empowerment builds their confidence and gives them skills to advocate for themselves and others in future.

-Learning Leadership and Organization
Many teenagers who participate in protests learn valuable skills, such as organizing events, mobilizing others, and communicating effectively. During the #EndSARS protests, young people took charge by coordinating food, medical supplies, and security for protesters. These leadership skills can help them in other areas of life, including school and future careers.

Negative Effects of Protests on Teenagers
-Exposure to Violence
One of the biggest risks for teenagers a t protests is the potential for violence. For example, during the #EndSARS protests, what started as peaceful demonstrations ended in violence, with the Lekki Toll Gate incident being a tragic example. Teenagers who attend protests may face dangerous situations, such as clashes with security forces, which can result in injuries or even death. This exposure to violence can also lead to psychological trauma.

-Manipulation and Misinformation
Teenagers are also vulnerable to manipulation during protests. Sometimes, protests are hijacked by groups with political or personal agendas that do not align with the original cause. Teenagers may unknowingly become tools for these groups, being drawn into situations they do not fully understand. Additionally, in the age of social media, misinformation spreads quickly, and many young protesters may be misled by fake news or propaganda, making it difficult to discern the true motives behind some protests.
On the positive side, protests foster political awareness, empowerment, unity, and leadership skills. However, they also carry significant risks, such as exposure to violence, emotional stress, disruption to education, and the possibility of being misled by misinformation.
Protests are an important way for Nigerian teenagers to express their dissatisfaction with societal issues and push for change. For Nigerian teenagers, it is essential to be aware of both the benefits and dangers of protests. While activism is important, they should ensure their safety, stay informed, and strike a balance between standing up for justice and maintaining their well-being. Protests can lead to meaningful change, but the journey must be approached with caution and responsibility.
