In a country where there are constant problems in different sectors, it is essential that teenagers rise to the forefront of activism. In a nation pulsating with youthful energy, teenage activism is expected to be witnessed. Whether it be things such as; the sickle cell walk or donating items to hospitals or orphanages, teenagers are expected to play a role in making society a better place with their youthful zest.
Teenage activism is when young individuals typically aged 13-18 engage in advocating for societal, ethical or environmental change and making the world a better and safer place. In Africa, especially Nigeria this movement has been driven by many factors including; Technology and patriotism etc.
The importance of teenage activism in Nigeria
Confidence: Teenage activism promotes self-confidence and empowers youths to participate in workshops and campaigning for a better community which inculcates a sense of wisdom into the teenagers that helps their future endeavours.
Good Political system: when it comes to issues such as; Corruption and Political instability, teenage activism helps in raising awareness for an accountable and effective system in the country.
Increasing health awareness: This helps in the tackling of stigma around mental health and other kinds of health problems and makes teenagers advocate and enlighten society about how to address health care ( especially in rural areas) ensuring the community does not turn a blind eye to the health sector.
Youth employment: Teenage activism helps teenagers push for job creation and vocational training programs to help others in gaining meaningful employment.
The impact of Nigerian activism cannot be understated. While immediate victories are not always guaranteed, the collective efforts of activists could lead to policy changes, increased public awareness, and a heightened sense of citizen empowerment while Nigeria navigates its complex socio-political landscape, activism could be a driving force for progress and accountability.
Teenage activists could face challenges like; resistance, online harassment, limited resources, safety concerns and misconceptions. Despite these obstacles, I encourage them to continue to push for change, demonstrating resilience and unwavering determination because their sacrifices underscore the urgency of their cause and is important for a better country.
Conclusion
Teenage activism in Nigeria is a testament to the power of youth in driving change. These young activists are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the leaders of today, harnessing their energy and passion to shape the nation’s course. Whether advocating for education, equality, or a healthier environment, their impact is undeniable. As they continue to push boundaries, challenge norms, and inspire change, Nigeria’s teenage activists are proving that age is no barrier to creating a better tomorrow.
