TCN Clarifies Power Outage, Denies National Grid Collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims indicating that the national grid has collapsed. In a statement issued on Saturday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah emphasized that the national grid remained stable and fully operational throughout the day.

Mbah explained that the power fluctuations observed in various regions of the country on Saturday were due to line tripping incidents. He identified the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho transmission lines as the sources of the disruption, which notably affected power supply to the Lagos area.

The statement from TCN asserts, “The nation’s grid did not experience any collapse today, contrary to the widely published misinformation in the media.” Mbah further detailed that at approximately 13:41 hours, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, followed shortly by the Benin-Omotosho line, which impacted bulk supply exclusively to the Lagos region.

He noted that prior to the tripping at around 13:00 hours, the total generation on the grid was recorded at 4,335.63 MW. Following the tripping incidents, generation dropped to 2,573.23 MW, clearly indicating that the grid did not collapse. The tripping affected several power stations, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras, all of which have been restored, except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is currently undergoing restoration.

TCN reiterated its commitment to enhancing the transmission grid despite ongoing challenges and stressed the importance of providing accurate information to the public, highlighting the detrimental effects of spreading falsehoods. Recently, Nigeria has faced multiple instances of national grid collapses, leading to widespread blackouts. In 2024, the country recorded over ten grid collapse incidents, a situation attributed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to aging infrastructure.
