The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urgently called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to tackle the pressing issues of hunger and economic hardship that many Nigerians are facing.
The student group has expressed deep concern over the severe economic challenges that are affecting the lives of ordinary citizens, stating that these hardships are leading to dire consequences for the population.
According to a report by Daily Post, in a statement released in Abeokuta, NANS Clerk of the Senate, Abdulyekinn Odunayo, voiced his frustrations regarding the current state of affairs under Tinubu’s administration.
He emphasized that many Nigerians are suffering from unnecessary poverty and hunger, which have become increasingly prevalent.
Odunayo pointed out that recent government policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the national currency, have significantly worsened the economic situation. These measures have plunged many into deeper despair, causing a sharp rise in living costs and further exacerbating hunger across the nation.
Odunayo acknowledged that while some students have benefited from the student loan program introduced by Tinubu’s government, there is still an urgent need for broader economic reforms.
He stressed that these reforms are essential for Nigerians to truly experience the good governance that President Tinubu has promised. The statement made it clear that immediate action is required to alleviate the suffering of citizens.
“There is an urgent need by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to put measures in place to arrest hunger, poverty, and impoverishment going on in the country,” Odunayo stated. He highlighted how “Nigerians are seriously groaning under the heavy burden of the present parlous economic situation. The nation has not had it this bad.”
He described how families are struggling to meet basic needs, with many unable to afford even one meal a day, let alone three.
The impact of currency devaluation has been particularly harsh, as Odunayo noted, “The dual swords of the Damocles of fuel subsidy removal and the float of naira have stabbed Nigerians at their hearts.”
The rapid decline in the value of the naira against foreign currencies has compounded the difficulties faced by many households.
As representatives of Nigerian students, NANS is making a heartfelt plea to President Tinubu to revise his economic strategies. They are calling for a comprehensive approach that includes short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions aimed at providing relief for those who are struggling. Odunayo emphasized that “things need to improve as many Nigerians are finding it difficult to survive.”
The message from NANS is clear: immediate and effective measures must be taken to address hunger and poverty in Nigeria.
The organization believes that without significant changes in policy and support for those in need, more families will continue to suffer under the weight of economic challenges.
