Unless Vice President Yemi Osinbajo contests for and wins the presidential election in 2023, he will be handing over to another person who will occupy the office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Constitution of the country allows only two terms of four years each.
There are at least three key leader in the All Progresives Congress (APC) that will likely be considered as the vice presidential candidate of the party. And if the party is successful again in 2023, one of them will surely become the next vice president of the country.
There is now an agitation that the southern part should be the next to produce the Nigerian president in 2023 because the incumbent Muhammadu Buhari is from North and considering the so-called conventional zoning formula, it is the turn of the south.
Really former Lagos State governor, who is also a national leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been considered as the potential candidate of the APC barring all unforseen circumstances. He is at the forefront in the struggle for the sole ticket of the APC.
The first leader that may be considered as the potential vice presidential candidate is Mr. Yakubu Dogara, the immediate past speaker of the House of Representatives. Dogara is from Bauchi State and a Christian for that matter.
When things became tougher for him in the APC, he left the party for the People’s Democratic Party, which returned him to the lower chamber of the National Assembly. Dogara later deemed it fit that it wouldn’t be in his best interest to be in the PDP for long. Hence, he decamped and rejoined the APC only in August, 2020.
