The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said that the country is targeting the development of 250 gigawatts of power supply from solar by the year 2060.
Osinbajo said this while speaking on Africa’s energy transition at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
He also maintained that “Africa’s endowments in renewable energy, natural resources, and a young workforce present a compelling set of circumstances for several pathways to climate-positive growth.
Osinbajo added that Africa should not just be considered a victim of climate change but also a potential solution to its challenges.
He acknowledged that Africa has a sizable technological hydrogen potential, and that when the price of green hydrogen decreases, the continent might become more competitive in various derivatives like ammonia, fertilisers, and e-fuels.
The Vice President further explained that the development of renewable energy, particularly solar, is a key component of Nigeria’s energy transition plan.
