Edet (Ed) Ubong Coordinating Director for the Nigeria Decade of Gas Initiative

As an Engineer with strong Leadership, Technical, Commercial, Financial, Policy development and Corporate Governance experience garnered over the last 25 years in the Oil and Gas industry, Ed Ubong is a well-respected gas industry leader. He recently served on the Board of Shell Nigeria Gas Limited for six (6) years as Managing Director. He has served on the board, Council of Nigerian Gas Association as Immediate Past President and is currently serving on the board/council of the Association of Local Distributors of Gas (ALDG). Ed was appointed Independent Council Member of Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Currently, he is the Coordinating Director for the Nigeria Decade of Gas Initiative, a government and private sector collaboration focused on growing Nigeria gas production and consumption over the next decade- gas for power, gas for homes (cooking gas), gas for industry and gas for export.
Recognised in 2023 as the African Gas Policy Advocate of the year by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources/ Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES), Ed serves as the Director for the Decade of Gas Secretariat and is responsible for coordinating the joint industry and Nigerian government gas acceleration initiative. Prior to his current position, he held the role of Managing Director at Shell Nigeria Gas, leading the company through a period of rapid growth and ensuring the safe achievement of its domestic gas growth and support for Nigeria industrialisation.
Ed joined Shell in 2001 as a Systems Engineer and has worked across various functions including Digital systems, Surface Engineering, Strategy, Deal Delivery and Asset Commercialization.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the Federal University of Technology Owerri, and a Master’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Southampton in the UK. He also obtained an MBA from INSEAD (France, Wharton US, and Singapore). He is the Immediate Past President of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), which serves as Nigeria’s overarching platform for advocating and fostering gas-related development.
Ed is deeply devoted to harnessing the potential of domestic gas within the energy value chain. His commitment in this realm was recognized when he was recently honored as the African Gas Advocate of the Year 2022.
Additionally, he is an active member of various professional associations, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
In 2023, Ed was recognised as African Gas Policy Advocate of the Year 2023 (NIES/ MPR), another recognition of his outstanding contribution at the 40th edition of Nigerian Association of Petroleum Engineers in 2022 and a recognition of outstanding Contribution to the 4th, 5th and 6th Edition of Nigeria International Energy Summit 2021, 2022 & 2023.
Ed has served as Keynote Speaker at the Oyo State International Business Summit 2023, an International Speaker at the Ghana Gas conference, 2021 and 2023 and an International Speaker at the World Gas conference, 2022. He is responsible for Pioneer Integration of Fingerprint Access Control Technology in Nigeria and Led a team of 4 local engineers to deliver one of the largest access control projects in Nigeria (card readers + biometric access control).
Ed is happily married to Agatha, and they are blessed with children.
