Call For Action: NMDPRA Pushes For Increased Availability Of CNG At Gas Stations

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is urging oil marketers to integrate Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) points into their filling stations, aiming to enhance accessibility for consumers. Engr. Farouk Ahmed, CEO of NMDPRA, conveyed this directive during a recent meeting with key oil marketing companies in Abuja.

He emphasized that new applications for retail licenses will now mandate the inclusion of CNG points.

Ahmed hailed the government’s drive to promote CNG as a revolutionary step toward alleviating the economic strain caused by traditional petrol usage.

He emphasized the need to bolster the supply chain, collaborating with production companies, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), NNPC Limited, and the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) to ensure competitive pricing and availability of CNG.

He underscored the importance of aligning with the President’s vision to transition towards CNG for mobility, reducing dependence on petrol. Ahmed appealed to companies to invest in CNG infrastructure at petrol stations, envisioning widespread availability akin to petrol, diesel, and kerosene.

Regarding recent petrol shortages, Engr. Farouk attributed the issue to logistical challenges faced by NNPC Limited in transporting products from offshore to onshore depots. While advocating for local refining to diminish imports, he clarified that the decision to purchase from the Dangote Refinery rested with oil marketers on commercial grounds.

Abdukabir Adisa Aliu, CEO of Matrix Energy, expressed readiness to support the government’s efforts in diversifying energy sources for Nigerians, emphasizing the collective responsibility toward national progress.

In conclusion, the call for integrating CNG points at filling stations underscores a strategic move toward sustainable energy practices, reflecting the government’s commitment to energy diversification and economic growth.
