President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, HE Nicolas Maduro Moros conferring HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, OPEC Secretary General the highest Venezuelan civil award, the Order of Francisco de Miranda, in its first class.

The Order of Francisco de Miranda (Orden Francisco de Miranda in Spanish) is conferred by the Republic of Venezuela in memory of Francisco de Miranda (1754–1816).

This national honor and decoration was created to recognize Venezuelan citizens and foreigners who have contributed to the sciences, to the progress of the country, to the humanities or who have exemplified outstanding merits.

Francisco de Miranda is an outstanding figure in Venezuelan revolutionary history. Born in Caracas, he fought as a military leader during the American Revolution, the French Revolution (his name is among the heroes of the French Revolutionary Forces included in the Arc de Triumph in Paris) and the Venezuelan Independence Revolution against Spain.

He is considered by our history as the most iconic and international Venezuelan – alongside our Liberator, Simon Bolivar.
