The Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan Archdioses, Most Rev. Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the ongoing controversy surrounding fuel prices involving Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). The call comes as millions of Nigerians continue to suffer from rising fuel costs.
The Archbishop made this appeal during a press conference ahead of his 75th birthday celebration, emphasizing the urgent need for clarity on the situation.
Archbishop Abegunrin expressed concern over NNPC’s role as a middleman in dictating fuel prices for Dangote’s refinery.
He stated, “NNPC is the one creating the problem. Why can’t they allow Dangote to sell fuel at a price convenient for him? If he likes, he can sell it free to the people. How can NNPC be dictating the price he sells his fuel? They are the ones destroying things; not Dangote.”
He further highlighted that the federal government should allow Dangote to set his prices, arguing that this would alleviate some of the hunger and hardship currently affecting Nigerians.
The Archbishop was accompanied by other church leaders, including Archbishop Felix Alaba Job and Bishop Simon Faddoul, who supported his views.
He also addressed misconceptions about church-run schools, stating that Catholic schools offer some of the most affordable fees available.
Additionally, he pointed out various initiatives by the Catholic Church aimed at alleviating poverty, such as providing food and employment opportunities.
He encouraged young members of the church to prioritize their education and strive for good grades to enhance their chances of securing employment.
This message was reinforced by Rev. Fr. Richard Omolade, who corroborated the Archbishop’s statements regarding the church’s efforts in community support.
