The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has said that the admission of the State into the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPADEC) will facilitate its production of about 25 megawatts (MW) of power at the Farin Ruwa Dam.

Governor Sule stated this when he hosted the HYPADEC Managing Director (MD), Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, and the Management staff of the commission at the Government House in Lafia.

He said that HYPADEC will assist Nasarawa in ensuring that power is generated at the dam, which is being constructed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

According to him, most communities in Awe, Loko, and Toto local government areas of the state continued to witness unprecedented flood yearly because of rivers in the areas that feed the River Benue.

Sadiq-Yelwa, had earlier stated that Nasarawa is among the states in need of urgent intervention as a result of the overflow of dams related to hydroelectricity, noting that the partnership would address those ecological threats.

In his own words, “we will identify and study these communities and see how it can reduce the challenges caused by flooding because the affected  communities lose their households, farm lands, and schools.

“We will also study the economic situation in these communities to see what can be done to uplift the living standards of these communities.”
