Port Harcourt Discos want Special Court for Energy Sector Established

By Adaobi Rhema Oguejiofor

The Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED), Dr. Benson Uwheru, has urged the judiciary to establish a dedicated court that will address and oversee legal issues in the power sector.

Uwheru made this request during a courtesy call to the Chief Judge of Cross River State, Justice Akon Bassey Ikpeme, where he argued that establishing such a court would ensure that cases brought before it by Disco are given the speedy attention they require.
The Head of Corporate Communications for PHED, Olubukola Ilevbare, said that Uwheru was on a visit to the Calabar Business Region, one of the franchise states of the Port Harcourt Disco, where he also met with other stakeholders. According to him, the tour was essential in order to engage the stakeholders of the Disco and strengthen the existing relationship between them.

The PHED Boss, in a statement, reminded the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6, Jonathan Toworu, that both the Company and the Police Force were bound by a common interest, which is the stake of the Federal Government in the Disco. He also urged the police command to settle their unpaid bills to the Disco.

Uwheru further appealed to the Commander of the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General E.I Okoro, to assist in protecting the Disco’s personnel and assets in order to enable staff carry out their duties without any form of intimidation.
