Consumer groups and economic experts on Thursday asked the Nigerian President-Elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his incoming administration to prioritize and hastily review the privatization of the power sector in the country.
After describing the performance of the sector as being very bad, they said that the incoming administration must give priority to power generation and supply to renew and improve the economic situation of Nigeria.
According to them, ever since the inactive Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)’s distribution companies were separated and transferred to private investors in 2013, the power sector has been facing struggles in trying to meet the demands of consumers nationwide.
From the time Nigeria’s power sector was privatized about 10 years ago till now, power generation and supply have continued to linger at around 3,500 and 5,000 megawatts, as over 200 million citizens of Nigeria continually manage small amounts of energy distribution daily.
Information credited to the Federal Ministry of Power shows that power fed into the national grid stood at 4,859.8 megawatts as of 6 am Thursday, and this in comparison to what was obtained in the past, is on the high side.
