Following the recent redemption of Federal Government’s pledge, 27 years after, to Nigerian Super Eagles for winning the African Nations Cup in 1994 in Tunisia, the Nigeria Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu Ejidike, JP has praised the courage and patriotism of President Mohammadu Buhari. The reward was of house unit to each member of the team, Valuechain reports.
Chief Donatus Agu Ejidike, in a statement, said that errors of 27 years have been corrected, even though some of the patriotic victorious players have departed to the great beyond.
The sports philanthropist added that going by the common aphorism that “late is better never” aptly placates frayed nerves on the actualization of the reward by the present administration under the leadership of President Buhari, would give hope to Nigerians that their labour would never be in vain in any national engagements.
Ejidike lamented that the crew of the 1944 Super Eagles waited in vain for so long to receive the reward which was announced by Late General Sani Abacha.
He sounded that it is unfortunate that many glorious sportsmen died in abject penury, to the extent that many of them could not foot their medical bills despite their contributions to the fame of the country through sports in their life time.
Ejidike further admonished the Federal Government and respective state governments to always give men and women honourable place in their policies promptly.
Valuechain quoted Ejidike as saying in the statement that “these sportsmen, in their chosen career, had done this country proud and deserved to be honoured and appreciated promptly to encourage budding talents to have zeal and patriotic spirit to dorn the national colours”.
The Nigeria Pillar of Sports declared that for this singular act of President Buhari, history will continue to bear witness.
